The name Bieberbau originates from sculptor and stucco master Richard Bieber who had his studio in a half-timbered lodge that now houses the restaurant. The premises dates back to 1894 and the interior miraculously survived World War II. Expressionist painters like Pechstein and Kirchner lived and worked here. Today the ornamentation of the restaurant stores an interesting testimony of a forgotten art form.

In the beginning, Bieberbau served as an inn for painters, neighbors and guests, and simultaneously as a showcase for the art work. Nowadays it provides the setting for chef and owner Stephan Garkisch’s modern French-inspired German cuisine that gets surprising flavor combinations from herbs and spices grown in his own garden.

If you like to spend an evening at some distance from the more popular districts in Berlin, in a rather peaceful and far from trendy restaurant, but that is an artistic, old-fashioned location, you are at the right place!

There are three set menus to choose from, including one vegetarian menu. You can chose and mix between the menus (that all of us did) and this is what I had:

Summary:

I am usually quite skeptical about the ratings deriving from tripadvisor and even though I do not agree with their rating regarding Bieberbau, as the number one restaurant in Berlin (out of about 4500 restaurants in total), I really liked and enjoyed our dinner there. Bieberbau is also very decently priced and this in regards to both the food and the wine. Recommended!
